General advice

The understanding and improvement of business processes are part of business analysis. Business processes are constantly subject to change in order to maximize the company’s objectives and achievements.

IT is one of the most important tools for effective business processes and the integration of GIS will further improve the efficiency of your business processes.

See Zachman framework.

With system integration, SIGGIS provides the connection between your GIS and your IT systems. Such integration, done through consultation, will reflect your current standards (internal, external, legal…) and will lead to a consolidated system architecture based on a robust conceptual scheme.

SIGGIS has already gained considerable experience in GIS integration for governmental and public service companies. When necessary, SIGGIS joins forces with larger partners.

Do you prefer a mobile GIS, a desktop GIS or a web GIS ... or a combination of them? Choosing a package is difficult. It is recommended to make that decision based on a study, because it will eventually lead to large differences in costs with regards to future developments or license fees.

GIS integration is often triggered by the choice of the package. SIGGIS however advises you to complete a business analysis and the design of system architecture first. This analysis will help you choose the software more effectively.

GIS-projects have an impact on extensive parts of your organization. As such, SIGGIS is involved in fundamental ICT research. To guide this research and ensure its quality, we, as an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, follow the principles of the Zachman-framework.

The Zachman framework comprises a formal and highly structured way of viewing and defining the architecture of an organization. Through the implementation of this framework, we’re able to provide a comprehensive requirements analysis and we can monitor the development and deployment. In this manner, the solution will be supported by the actual requirements and your organization’s processes.

SIGGIS wants to help your organization fill in the ‘why’, ‘how’, ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘when’ at every level of abstraction. These levels are:

  • Objective: contextual listing of business processes
  • Enterprise: the model of the business processes
  • System: an architecture of the system model
  • Technology: a technical design of the system
  • Details: fully developed design
  • Functioning: how the system is implemented and how it will work

The Zachman framework demands both broad and in-depth analyses. This requires quite some effort but this effort contributes to the enterprise implementation. Developing all the abstraction levels casts a clear light on the needs and requirements of your administration, GIS framework and IT-framework. And this both from the perspective of the organization as from its position in society. Ultimately, the Zachman framework will enable a lasting and straightforward GIS integration that complies with the expectations at all levels of your organization.

To ensure that the Zachman principle is adhered to thoroughly, it is essential to assign the various levels to separate experts. Ideally, the requirements analysis, logical analysis, technical analysis, development, testing and eventual integration (roll-out) are carried out by different teams. Each maintaining a clear focus on completeness of documentation and transferability of knowledge. Within Zachman there are three levels where iterations are possible based on interaction with the end-user: business analysis, requirements analysis and the development itself, including logical and technical analysis.
